Ram 1500 vs. 2500 vs. 3500: towing and load capacity for 2026-2027

Ram 1500 vs. 2500 vs. 3500: towing and load capacity for 2026-2027

Here's the short version: the Ram 1500 towing capacity tops out around 11,220 lb. with the Hurricane Standard-Output engine. The Ram 2500 towing capacity climbs to 20,000 lb. with the High-Output Cummins diesel. The Ram 3500 towing capacity reaches as high as 36,610 lb. with the same Cummins engine, once you're in dually territory. Payload follows a similar climb: up to 1,840 lb. on the 1500, 4,580 lb. on the 2500, and higher still on the 3500 depending on configuration.

These are maximums, not your truck's number. Engine, cab, bed and axle ratio all change the rating. Check your door-jamb sticker or Ram's Build & Price tool for your exact figure, or reach out to an Orillia Dodge expert. We’re always here to help.

Towing capacity vs. payload capacity: what's the difference?

People mix these up all the time, and it's an easy mistake. Here's the plain version.

Towing capacity is how much weight your truck can pull behind it, on a trailer.

Payload is how much weight your truck can carry inside it, in the cab and the bed, including your trailer's tongue weight once it's hitched up. Different jobs, different numbers, and you can't borrow from one to boost the other.

For Ram load capacity specs to make sense, you need three terms most people have never had explained to them properly:

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) is the max your truck can weigh, fully loaded, no trailer attached. That's the truck itself plus everyone in it plus everything in the bed. Go over this number and you're overloaded, even if you're not towing anything.

GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) is the max total weight of your truck AND your trailer, combined, everything included. This is the real ceiling on how big a trailer you can pull, since it accounts for the truck's own weight too, not just the trailer.

Ram 2500 2027

Tongue weight is how much of the trailer's weight pushes down on your hitch. Too little and the trailer sways at highway speed. Too much and you overload your rear axle. The rule of thumb: tongue weight runs about 10% of the trailer's total weight on a conventional hitch, closer to 15% on a fifth wheel or gooseneck setup. If you're towing a 10,000 lb. trailer with a bumper-pull hitch, plan on roughly 1,000 lb. sitting on that hitch, and that weight counts against your payload.

Here's the part that trips people up: your payload has to cover passengers, cargo, AND that tongue weight, all at once. A truck that looks like it has plenty of payload on paper can run out fast once you add a full cab, a loaded bed, and a heavy trailer tongue.

Ram 1500 towing capacity (2026-2027)

Ram 1500 2027

For Ram towing capacity by trim, the 1500 spans a wide range depending on what's under the hood.

The base 3.6L Pentastar V6 with eTorque tows up to 7,340 lb. Step up to the Hurricane 3.0L Standard-Output inline-6 and you're looking at up to 11,220 lb,. the highest rating in the lineup.

The 5.7L HEMI V8 with eTorque lands at 10,170 lb. The High-Output Hurricane, tuned more for performance than towing, tops out at 10,000 lb.

So the honest range for the 2026 Ram 1500 runs from roughly 7,340 lb. to 11,220 lb., and the engine you pick is the biggest factor.

But it's not the only one. Cab size, bed length and axle ratio all shift the number further.

A Quad Cab with a shorter box generally out-tows a longer Crew Cab on the same drivetrain, since it's lighter to start. Rear axle ratio matters too: a numerically higher ratio (like 3.92 versus 3.21) trades a bit of fuel economy for more low-end pulling power, which is where the max tow ratings come from.

What this means for you: if you're pulling a boat, a small camper, or a utility trailer under 10,000 lb., most 1500 configurations handle it. If you're closer to that 11,000 lb. ceiling regularly, you might want to dive into Heavy Duty territory. Understanding the broader differences between the Ram 1500 vs. 2500 vs. 3500 can also help you decide whether moving to a Heavy Duty truck makes sense for your workload.

Ram 1500 payload capacity

Ram 1500 payload capacity ranges from about 1,330 lb. to 1,840 lb., depending on Ram truck trim packages. Work trims like the Tradesman sit near the top, since less luxury equipment means less curb weight. Off-road trims like the Rebel and RHO trade some of that away, landing closer to 1,510 lb., because the heavier suspension and skid plates add weight before you've even loaded anything.

Payload covers everyone in the cab, everything in the bed, bolted-on gear, and your trailer's tongue weight if you're towing. Add it all up before assuming you've got room to spare.

Ram 2500 2027

For Ram 2500 load capacity and Ram towing capacity when equipped with the diesel, the gap between engines is significant. The 6.4L HEMI V8 tows up to 17,440 lb. and carries a max payload of 4,580 lb. Step up to the High-Output Cummins diesel and towing jumps to 20,000 lb., with more torque for climbing steep grades under load.

Conventional towing generally runs 14,000 to 20,000 lb. across the 2500 lineup. A Ram towing capacity with a 5th wheel or gooseneck setup uses that same 20,000 lb. ceiling more efficiently, since the hitch sits over the rear axle instead of off the bumper, which is why heavier trailers are usually matched with a fifth wheel or gooseneck rather than a conventional hitch in the first place.

Ram 2500: price, trims and specs influence towing and payload greatly. Take the Power Wagon for example. Built for off-road hardware like locking differentials and a winch, it trades some payload and towing capacity for that capability. Whether that trade makes sense comes down to what you want your truck for, off-road work or maximum towing.

Ram 3500 towing and load capacity: SRW vs. DRW

The Ram 3500: price and specs and trims splits into two builds, and the difference matters.

Single rear wheel (SRW) models handle conventional and lighter 5th-wheel towing. Dual rear wheel (DRW) models, the "dually," carry a GVWR of 14,000 lb. or more and unlock the highest numbers in the lineup: up to 36,610 lb. with the High-Output Cummins diesel.

The 6.4L HEMI V8 tops out at 18,150 lb. properly equipped. Ram 3500 payload capacity runs roughly 3,500 to 7,000 lb. depending on cab, bed, engine and SRW versus DRW configuration, one of the widest spreads of any Ram truck.

If you're pulling a big gooseneck horse trailer or a heavy equipment trailer near that 36,610 lb. ceiling, you need the DRW dually. For lighter conventional towing and everyday hauling, SRW keeps things simpler.

If you’re hesitating between a Ram 1500 vs. 2500 vs. 3500 for towing, the right truck comes down to what you're actually pulling, not the biggest number on the spec sheet.

A Ram 1500 is perfect for daily driving, light hauling, boats, small campers, utility trailers. You can get close to the maximum rating for your specific configuration, but if towing is part of your daily grind, you might want to look at a Heavy Duty truck like the 2500. An Orillia expert can give you personalized advice.

A Ram 2500 can tow heavier equipment and trailers, mid-size RVs, work trailers that outgrow a half-ton. The diesel option adds real headroom if you're near the ceiling regularly.

A Ram 3500, especially with dual wheels, gives you access to max-capacity towing, big gooseneck trailers, and intense work applications. If you're routinely near that 36,610 lb. range, this is the only truck built for it.

FAQ: Ram towing and load capacity

Does a diesel engine increase towing capacity on the 2500 or 3500?

Generally, yes, thanks to higher torque. Payload can sometimes be slightly lower on diesel models due to the engine's added weight, depending on configuration.

What's the difference between conventional and 5th-wheel/gooseneck towing capacity?

Conventional hitches mount behind the bumper. Fifth wheel and gooseneck hitches mount over the rear axle, which distributes weight differently and unlocks higher max towing ratings.

Can an aftermarket hitch increase my Ram's towing capacity?

No. GVWR and GCWR are set by the manufacturer and can't be legally exceeded. A hitch upgrade has to match your truck's rating, it doesn't raise it.

How much towing capacity do I need for a travel trailer?

Start with the trailer's fully loaded weight, not its dry weight. Add passengers, cargo and hitch weight to the calculation, then compare those figures with your truck's specific towing, payload and combined weight ratings. A product advisor can help you identify a suitable Ram configuration.
